How do I network when I'm stuck at work?

by admin on June 19, 2009

Hi I am an advertising Copywriter (Cant give my company name as I will get booted off Yahoo). One of my big problems is I am still stuck in a 9 to 5 office job. This is a catch 22 as i need to get out there to find clients but need the security of the job until I take off.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can network or find clients with this situation?

Use a lead generating company, and have a website with examples of your work.

I highly recommend that you join the online networking clubs for professionals. There are many online, but the biggest ones that come to mind are: elance, eacademy, linkedin
and i'm sure there are others related to the creative industry.

They are usually free to join and some even have noticeboards so that you can advertise for work or look through an ad and approach a prospective client to do some work for them. Also there are offline clubs I don't know the names of them, but I would start with your local Chambers of Commerce.

Make you're armed with your selling tools: business cards, website with testimonials, examples of work and client list etc.

Check out other small biz or entrepreneur sites like startups.co.uk or entrepreneur.com (US site but has great ideas). Also go to business start up events like the one in London at the Excel centre this weekend or any that are local to you.

Every time you're away from your desk, ie 5pm-9am is a networking opps. Be ready to use it.
